On the latest episode of Comics Coast to Coast we switched gears a little and sat down with Nate Piekos to chat about comic lettering, his font design site Blambot, and his endearing comic The Berserker’s Daughter. Nate balances his time between work as a comic book letterer for Dark Horse and designing a new font every month for Blambot. There is a good chance you know his work already. He has lettered comics for Marvel, DC, and Oni Press, and he has been commissioned by companies like Microsoft, Six Flags Amusement Parks and The Gap. It’s always a treat to get someone on the show so passionate about such a specific craft. Grab your earbuds and prepare to be blasted by Blambot!

I’ve been using Disqus on The Citadel Cafe blog for quite some time, but it was only yesterday with the handy help of friend and website problem solver Ryan Murphy that I am happy to say that Disqus has been implemented on JoelDuggan.com and StarcrossedOnline.com.
I much prefer the look and feel of Disqus over the standard WordPress and ComicPress comment system. Plus, there is no need to create a yet another user account for new visitors. You can comment anonymously or sign in with your existing Twitter, Facebook, or Google account. Super simple.
Looking forward to chatting with everyone!
Brian Dunaway, Matthew Ducharme and myself are celebrating two years of podcasting together this year. The funny thing about podcasting is that you spend a great deal of time talking and planning with your co-hosts and spend almost no time with them in real life. I met Brian two years ago, but this year at Nerdtacular - the annual gathering of producers and podcast fans of the FrogPants network - was the first time that all three of us have been in the same room together. Comics Coast to Coast has been around for over 200 episodes. I came on board around Episode 115. I have yet to meet John Sanford, Justin Thompson or Tom Racine the other original hosts of the show, but that’s on my bucket list.
Recording live with a small studio audience was a real treat. So much so that we have arranged for Comics Coast to Coast to be broadcast live audio on Alpha Geek Radio from now on. Tune in live Thursday nights at 7PM Eastern Time at AlphaGeekRadio.com, Channel 2 or on the new Comics Coast to Coast live page.
How to find Lissy and En Voyage:
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of speaking with Lissy Martin and Barbara Perez during our interview with them on Comics Coast to Coast. Lissy is a visual development artist and children’s book illustrator. The focus on the interview though is on her upcoming art book En Voyage: An Illustrated Journey, currently available for pre-order via her crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo. Barbara Perez is the editor on the project.
En Voyage is an 8 x 8, 150 page soft cover book of illustrations and art by Lissy, inspired by a eight week trip she took through the Netherlands, Germany, France and Spain last year. At $25 it is an absolute steal! There are only 15 days left in the campaign, so hurry and secure your copy today and help this book get made!

I’m back! I think.
I need to give another quick shout out and thanks to Adam Huber of Bug Martini for doing a guest comic for Starcrossed while I was away at Nerdtacular in Utah. It’s a hilarious strip. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you haven’t already.
Then, go straight to Adam’s site and read Bug Martini!
I’m a bit behind on Starcrossed. My first week back from vacation – really only three days – was crazy. Then, Jocelyn’s parents flew down to surprise her for her birthday. I’m on top of the comic today, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.
In the mean time, take a look through some new illustration and design work I uploaded to my Behance profile.
- I designed this print ad (below) for DogHouse Systems.
- Helped Tom Bancroft give his webcomic Outnumbered a facelift.
- And I illustrated another fun article for CollegeHumor.com. It’s about pooping in public bathrooms. A must see. (And, safe for work!)
More updates coming soon!
I’m heading to Nerdtacular 2014 at Snowbird, Salt Lake City Utah!
Once again Jocelyn and I are making the FrogPants migration to the Snowbird resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon in the mountains just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of our friends and fellow podcasters for what will no doubt be a fun filled extended holiday weekend of geeking out.
This year the main Nerdtacular event spans two days on July 4th and 5th. I will be participating in a live comics panel on Friday, July 4th at 1:30PM MTN (3:30 EST) with Scott Johnson, Brian Dunaway, Adriana Ferguson, and Howard Porter (DC) hosted by Stephen Schleicher. The comics panel will be live streamed from the main stage. You can watch on the FrogPants Twitch stream.
After the comics panel, Brian and I will be joined by Matthew Ducharme to do a live recording of Comics Coast to Coast from 3:00PM to 4:00PM on Friday in the Superior Room. We will be recording in front of a live audience but at this point I’m not sure if the podcast will be live streamed.
Outside of the scheduled events Jocelyn and I will be around to hang out with as many people as we can. So don’t be shy! I am also bringing a handful of books to sketch in and sign for anyone interested. There is a producers table in the vendor area. Follow me on Twitter to keep up with me over the weekend.
See everyone soon!
