The number of “favorite interviews” I have been a part of on Comics Coast to Coast continues to grow. Our conversation with character designer and comic artist Nicholas Kole is the latest conversation I’ve added to that list. Two of Nicholas’s latest projects The Course Of Maleficent and the Dawngate Chronicles are exemplary of his attention to his craft. He’s also a super nice guy with lots of insight and interesting stories to tell. Don’t miss our chat about his illustration work, career as a visual development artist, and his mustache.
How to find Wesley and Namless PCs:
Earlier last month I filled in for Brian at the helm of Comics Coast to Coast and Matt and I interviewed Nameless PCs artist Wesley Hall. In a complete “I’m too busy for my own good” blunder combined with other time sensitive interview dates the interview went unpublished until last week. Sorry Wes! Originally a scripted effort with writing partner Matt Roberts, Nameless PCs has gone the route of the journal comic with Wes the sole captain, occasionally accompanied by his partner in crime, his wife. After a few strips of Nameless PCs and you’ll quickly learn that the empire is expanding!

I really enjoy doing commissions for readers and fans. It’s almost always a really fun experience. Every now and then, the excitement of sharing the finished piece of art is topped by someone who has chosen me to craft something for a really special occasion. Mike and Sarah have supported my work a few times. Sarah commissioned an Indiana Jones themed cartoon avatar as a birthday gift for Mike. A hit, Sarah followed up with another Indiana Jones piece of original art for Christmas. Then it was Mike’s turn.
After proposing to Sarah at Christmas, Mike asked me to create a cartoon portrait for their destination wedding and engagement announcement! It’s always flattering to get a request for something like this, but it was really fun to take on the project after getting to know Mike and Sarah of the past year or so. I recently received an email from Mike that said the illustration was so well received by family and friends that he and Sarah decided to use it for their local wedding reception invitations and their gift bags. There is even a set of custom Mike and Sarah playing cards for their guests. So fun!
Mike and Sarah are tying the knot on July 5th.
I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Steph Laberis and Jeannine Schafer last night. Steph is a freelance character designer and illustrator. Jeannnine works for Disney Interactive. Each year they combine their über cute personal illustrations into an art book called Snorffles n’ Meeps. This year they’re combining Volume 1 and Volume 2, adding 64 pages of new artwork and presenting it in a 124 page hard cover edition! The project tis currently on Kickstarter, set to close on June 13th. Steph and Jeannine are talented, funny, passionate artists that deserve your eyeballs. Check them out!

Reader and listener Mike Sweetman of beahealthygeek.com commissioned this Healthy Geek superhero character pinup. Be A Healthy Geek is a site that offers a guide to setting monthly goals in fitness, nutrition and geeky-ness. Mike is in the process of revamping the site and the new art will be implemented soon. It was a lot of fun to come up with something based on Mike’s loose description of a “green and purple hero with an ‘H’ on his chest, reminiscent of Batman in the 1960′s.” - Thanks Mike!
