Remember the ‘Bitter Beer Face’ commercials? Speaking of bitter beer. I drink O’doul’s, ugh, that can be bitter.
I really enjoy Propeller Bitter, a local micro brew here in Halifax. Easily my favorite “go to” beer. I also like some local IPA from Rogues Roost (only available at the pub) and the Garrison Brewery Imperial Pale Ale.
Rogue’s Roost. As in, Rogue brewery? That’s from my hometown of Newport, Oregon. I gotta get back to Canada.
Nope, Rogues Roost isn’t a franchise. It’s just one micro brew pub here in Halifax. Great burgers too!
Hey Joel! I heard you on the webcomics Alliance podcast… and the comics coast to coast podcast this week. (I totally agree with you on the Bobby Chui stuff) I like your comic. I look forward to reading more.
Hey Will – Thanks for tuning in to the podcasts. Just like comics, it’s always nice to hear when people are listening and reading what you’re putting out on the interwebs. Glad you’re enjoying Starcrossed as well.
I do sit on the fence a little with The Perfect Bait… Obviously Chiu is a successful designer. His paintings and designs are insane. I have always enjoyed his work. I am just not a fan of the book or the way he presented it. That’s how things go though. I don’t expect fans of Starcrossed to love everything I do either.
To be honest, I’ve felt that way about Bobby for a while, even before the book. When I first found him, I really liked the videos he was putting out, and the stuff he was trying to do. Then at some point everything he started putting out just felt like advertisements for something he was trying to sell, and it really turned me off. Your comment on how Steve Silver gave him that help freely, really nailed it for me. I buy pretty much everything Steve Silver puts out, because he is so giving. But Bobby creeps me out with the way he does it. He has the potential to do great things for people, but it feels like the intention behind it is wrong.
Well said sir. Well said.
I wasn’t so familiar with Bobby Chiu’s work that I knew of his early videos. I only found his still work. I have to confess that after listening to some Steve Silver interviews (not recently) I sort of have the same feeling about Silver that I do about Chiu.
It sounds like I may be mistaken? Any links you want to share for me to check out?
I picked up a small Steve Silver sketchbook from my local comic shop last summer for $3.00. “Sketches by Silver – Volume One.” (2004) Nice little book. Original ticket price was $20.00! Can’t say I would have paid that for it. Although I am looking into publishing my own book this year, and I may change my tune once I go through that process myself.
Steve Silver’s Art cast was really good, and I didnt feel like it was a gimmick. Here’s a link to his podcast… http://www.silvertoons.com/podcast.html He really seemed to genuinely want to help people. And later on he put it all into his “passion for life” book. But its all content he had posted on blogs and facebook (for free) for years. My wife carries it around in her purse all the time, lol. I’ve met both of them several times and I’ve found Steve to be super nice to everyone he meets.
I really wish I could say that about Bobby, but the times I’ve met him at shows I walked away disappointed. I can understand wanting to make money from your content. But it doesn’t feel sincere anymore with Bobby. I really don’t know him well enough to say if thats true. I don’t know what’s in his head. He seems to be doing well though. I wish him the best.
I think i did try to listen to Steve’s Artcast but couldn’t get into it. Not saying that there was anything wrong with the content, just that for whatever the reason was I didn’t continue. I will check it out again. Thanks for the link!
